Some enthusiasts say first-gen Camaro SS’s were manufactured with 327 engines. This is untrue – no production Camaro SS’s were built with engines smaller than 350 ci. There was a factory 327 Camaro with tech/spec/performance very similar to the SS 350. The L30/M20 was a “sleeper” package with no tell-tale external badging. To the undiscerning eye, just another plain-Jane 327 Camaro. L30 327 275 hp with M20 4-speed created true high-performance due to additional components installed when the Saginaw 4-speed transmission was paired with the L30 engine. Package details were poorly documented and essentially unadvertised; probably only the most discerning enthusiasts of the era realized the implications. Budget minded performance enthusiasts (Motor Heads) could optimize fun by including additional options on the L30/M20 meeting specific needs, creating a true sleeper. Less publicized L30 upgrade to base 327 boosted performance from 210 to 275 hp. Combined with the M20 4-speed, and only in this case, L30 crossed into high-performance territory sharing SS high-performance components.
