Astronomers have discovered that Proxima Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbor, releases incredibly violent flares that pose a serious threat to life on its orbiting planets. In March 2016 or later, the star unleashed a superflare visible to the naked eye, briefly becoming about 1000× brighter in visible light, emitting 10× more energy than the strongest solar flares we observe. More recent monitoring in 2019 captured another massive blast in ultraviolet and millimeter wavelengths 100× stronger than typical solar flares, confounding expectations about red dwarf activity. Such extreme outbursts regularly bombard Proxima b, the Earth-size planet in the star’s habitable zone. Studies show repeated flares can strip away atmospheres and deplete protective ozone layers by 90% within years, exposing any surface life to lethal levels of radiation. Though red dwarfs are abundant in our galaxy, their habitability must now be reassessed in light of frequent, powerful flares. This runaway stellar weather suggests that even worlds positioned at the right distance for liquid water could be rendered uninhabitable by relentless space storms. Image Credit: NSF/AUI/NSF NRAO/S. BREAKING: Cambodian former PM and Senate President Hun Sen on Wednesday confirms the authenticity of an audio clip with Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra lasting 17 minutes. Hun Sen posted a message on FB stating: "On the evening of June 15, 2025, I had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Thailand, which lasted a total of 17 minutes and 6 seconds. Mr. Kleang Huot served as the interpreter, as usual. To avoid misunderstandings or misrepresentations in official matters, it was necessary to record the conversation for transparency and for internal use within Cambodia. “Subsequently, I distributed the audio file of my conversation with the Thai Prime Minister to approximately 80 individuals, including members of the Standing Committee of the Party, the Senate working group, the National Assembly team, foreign affairs agencies, education and dissemination agencies, border working groups, and members of the armed forces. Among these individuals, some may not agree with the Thai Prime Minister. A few hours after the conversation, the Thai Prime Minister accused the Cambodian leader of engaging in 'unprofessional' politics and conducting political activities via Facebook, an action that contradicts her own words. “Regarding the leaked audio file, I observe that currently, only about 9 minutes of it have been released to the public. Therefore, if the Thai side desires the full audio file, I am ready to release the entire conversation, which is 17 minutes and 6 seconds long." #Thailand #Cambodia #HunSen #Paetongtarn
