Very Strong Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake - 58 km north of Copiapo, Copiapo, Region de Atacama, Chile, on Friday, Jun 6, 2025, at 02:15 pm (Santiago time) - 7 hours ago The quake had a shallow depth of 65 km (40 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would. Several structures sustained damage, including broken windows and facade damage at a shopping mall in Copiapó, as well as damage to other buildings and a church in the downtown area. Elsewhere, authorities are assessing reports of damage to homes and a Red Cross building near the epicenter. The earthquake also triggered landslides along several roads and caused disruptions to power and communications services across the region. Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world and lies along the commonly denominated Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast seismically active region encircling much of the Pacific Ocean. The Ring of Fire is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, though it is not a unified geological system.

Menu National June 7, 2025 Cambodia reaffirms commitment to peaceful resolution of border dispute with Thailand Prime Minister Hun Manet has a telephone conversation with Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. PMO Click here to get Khmer Times Breaking News direct into your Telegram FacebookTwitterEmailShare Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has reaffirmed the Royal Government’s firm commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing border dispute with neighbouring Thailand, outlining a four-point stance on the matter. During a phone conversation on Friday evening with Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and the current Chair of ASEAN, Hun Manet expressed his gratitude for Malaysia’s attention to the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border. The Cambodian Prime Minister emphasised the Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to maintaining peace, friendship, and constructive cooperation with Thailand. He explained that Cambodia’s decision to bring the border issues concerning the areas of Mom Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reflects a desire to find a timely and peaceful resolution. Leaving these issues unresolved for an extended period could risk renewed armed conflict, he said. At the same time, Hun Manet emphasised Cambodia’s commitment to continuing its collaboration with the Thai side to finalise the measurement, demarcation, and placement of border markers in the remaining areas. This will be done through the existing mechanism of the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Commission on the Survey and Demarcation of Land Boundary (JBC). The Prime Minister further stressed that Cambodia remains committed to strengthening bilateral relations through all existing mechanisms for the supreme interest of the two peoples. The Cambodia-Thailand border tension intensified when Thai military forces opened fire on a Cambodian army post located in Techo Morokot village, Morokot commune, Choam Khsan district, Preah Vihear province—an area long recognised as a Cambodian military position on the morning of May 28, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Tragically, the exchange resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Menu National June 6, 2025 Cambodia, Thailand agree to ease border tensions through dialogue and legal channels Khmer Times Click here to get Khmer Times Breaking News direct into your Telegram FacebookTwitterEmailShare Cambodian Minister of National Defence, General Tea Seiha, announced on Thursday afternoon that Cambodia and Thailand have reached an agreement to ease recent tensions along the shared border in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo Province, following a high-level bilateral meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Phumtham Wechayachai. The meeting, which came in response to escalating military presence and disputes around the Aranyaprathet area, led to several key outcomes, all of which emphasised peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and long-term solutions to maintain regional stability. According to Gen Seiha, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to de-escalating tensions and avoiding any armed confrontation. “We have agreed to maintain open lines of communication, mutual understanding, and peaceful dialogue moving forward to prevent military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand,” he said in a social media post. During the talks, the Thai side proposed that Cambodian troops withdraw from their current positions near the disputed Joint Office area, returning to the status quo as it was in 2024 before the office building was damaged by fire. However, Cambodia firmly rejected this proposal, with Tea Seiha asserting that the area in question lies within Cambodia’s sovereign territory and has long been under Cambodian control. “Cambodia cannot and will not retreat from this position,” he declared, underscoring the country’s firm stance on defending its territorial integrity. As no mutual understanding has been reached due to disagreements over maps and standards used to delineate the border, Cambodia has decided to submit a formal case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The case will cover four contentious areas: Mlm Bei (EmeraldTriangle), Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Toch Temple, and Ta Krabey Temple.Seiha emphasised that this legal step aims to resolve the dispute peacefully and permanently. “Cambodia remains committed to peace, stability, and the shared interests of our peoples,” he said, adding that Thailand has acknowledged Cambodia’s right to bring the matter before the ICJ. Despite the disagreement on troop movements, both countries have agreed to continue dialogue under the existing bilateral mechanisms, including the General Border Committee (GBC), the Joint Border Committee (JBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC), to address other outstanding issues and maintain cooperation.

June 6, 2025: “Freedom” unfortunately can undermine unity. A glance through the home page of The Phnom Penh Post could give a feeling that the Cambodian government can luckily forget the local media and concentrate on smearing Bangkok. There is zero criticism of the Cambodian administration on the website. It should be more or less the same when other news outlets of Cambodia are concerned. In Thailand, on the contrary, about half of the coverage is on military movements of both sides and the other half had to do with negative things about the Thai government regarding its handling of the latest border conflict.
