Trump-endorsed Rep. Mike Collins wins Georgia GOP runoff to take on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff: AP projects

Image
Georgia Rep. Mike Collins, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump just days ago, is projected to win the runoff for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate and take on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in the fall, according to the Associated Press. With about 59% of the expected vote counted, Collins led Derek Dooley 55% to 45%, according to the AP. Dooley, a former football coach, had been endorsed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Collins is now projected to face off against Ossoff, the Democratic incumbent, in November, in what is expected to be one of the most competitive -- and most expensive -- races on the map in 2026. Democrats need to keep Ossoff's seat if they have any chance of taking the Senate, and Republicans see the Georgia seat as one of their best Senate pick-up opportunities. "It is my Great Honor to endorse "MAGA" Mike Collins, a Highly Respected Congressman who has been with me from the very beginning," the president wrote on his social media platfo...

Massive chunk of sea ice has not refrozen in West Antarctica, satellite images show

A massive chunk of sea ice in West Antarctica has not refrozen following a winter heatwave in the region – a dramatic change that could further contribute to global sea level rise, experts told ABC News. Graphics based on satellite imagery from the University of Colorado Boulder's National Snow and Ice Data Center taken on Sunday show a large portion of sea ice measuring approximately 150,000 square miles – roughly the size of Montana – is not included in what is typically already frozen at this time of year, which is mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere, experts told ABC News. Every winter, Antarctic sea ice grows and decays, Peter Neff, a glaciologist at the University of Minnesota who specializes in ice core records, told ABC News. But since 2015, Antarctic sea ice has entered a "new, much reduced state," in which less and less is re-freezing due to rising air and sea temperatures, Neff said. This year, the level of sea ice in West Antarctica is about 50% lower tha...

Law enforcement officials earlier told ABC News a hospital employee is suspected of shooting two co-workers. The shooting occurred at Wilmington Hospital around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. One of the shooting victims died, according to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos. Police are not sharing details on the condition of the second employee, as well as the names of both shooting victims, at this time, Campos said. Police believe the incident is strictly a workplace shooting, the law enforcement officials said. The name of the suspect is known to police, and the individual may have been a temporary employee, officials told ABC News earlier. At a press briefing Tuesday, Campos said police were working to confirm the suspect's identity. "Regardless of what the motive is in this incident might have been, there is never an ex...

President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites. Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, initial U.S.-Iran talks in Pakistan in April failed to reach a peace deal. Trump later announced the open-ended extension of the ceasefire and the continuation of a U.S. blockade until negotiations concluded. On Sunday, Trump announced that the U.S. and Iran had reached a "great deal," which he said would be signed on Friday. New US-Iran talks to begin after MOU signed, official says Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that the new round of negotiations between Iran and the U.S. for a final peace agreement will start the day after signing the memorandum of understanding, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said Tuesday that the speaker of the Iranian...
